The island of Hispaniola, which today is the home of the Dominican Republic and the Republic of Haiti, was originally home to the Taino Indians. The Taino's were ruled by a cacique (cheif) and an impressively complex central government system. When the Europeans first arrived on Hispaniola, headed by Christopher Columbus, in 1492, the Spanish overpowered the Taino government and civilization. Christopher Columbus' brother, Bartholomew Columbus, officially founded the city of Santo Domingo on August 5, 1498. However, the city actually dates back to 1496, when the first Europeans settled in the area.

During my most recent visit to the Dominican Republic's capital city, I took a ride aboard Santo Domingo's Metro, a sleek and modern mass transit system that debuted in 2008. It doesn't connect many locations important to vacationer or international business travelers yet (more lines are planned for the future), but it's still an interesting and fun new way to see the city!

The Dominican Republic is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are occupied by two countries. Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba), with 48,442 square kilometres (18,704 sq mi) and an estimated 10 million people. Inhabited by Taínos since the seventh century, the territory of the Dominican Republic was reached by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, namely Santo Domingo, the country's capital and Spain's first capital in the New World. In Santo Domingo stand, among other firsts in the Americas, the first university, cathedral, and castle, the latter two in the Ciudad Colonial area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After three centuries of Spanish rule, with French and Haitian interludes, the country became independent in 1821 but was quickly taken over by Haiti. Victorious in the Dominican War of Independence in 1844, Dominicans experienced mostly political turmoil and a brief return to Spanish rule over the next 72 years. The United States occupation of 19161924, and a subsequent, calm and prosperous six-year period under Horacio Vásquez Lajara, were followed by the military dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina until 1961. The last civil war was ended by the 1965 United States occupation of the Dominican Republic, and was followed by the authoritarian rule of Joaquin Balaguer, 1966 1978. Since then, the Dominican Republic has moved toward representative democracy, and has been led by Leonel Fernández for most of the time after 1996. The Dominican Republic has adopted economic liberalism, and has the second largest economy in the Caribbean.Though long known for sugar production, the economy is now dominated by services. The country's economic progress is exemplified by its advanced telecommunication system. Nevertheless, unemployment, government corruption, and inconsistent electric service remain major Dominican problems. The country also has "marked income inequality". International migration greatly affects the country, as it receives and sends large flows of migrants. Haitian immigration and the integration of Dominicans of Haitian descent are major issues; the total population of Haitian origin is estimated to be 800,000. A large Dominican diaspora exists, most of it in the United States, where it comprises 1.3 million. They aid national development as they send billions of dollars to their families, accounting for one-tenth of the Dominican GDP. The Dominican Republic has become the Caribbean's largest tourist destination; the country's year-round golf courses are among the top attractions. In this mountainous land is located the Caribbean's highest mountain, Pico Duarte, as is Lake Enriquillo, the Caribbean's largest lake and lowest elevation. Quisqueya, as Dominicans often call their country, has an average temperature of 26 °C (79°F) and great biological diversity. Music and sport are of the highest importance in Dominican culture, with merengue as the national dance and song and baseball the favorite sport. ( source Wikipedia )

We are in the town of Las Terrenas located in the Samaná province of the Dominican Republic. This is a walking tour of the town which starts on the Las Terranas main road and also includes a walk on the beach road. We where there in December and this is actually New Year (31/12). The video follows our walk up the main road where we try to give the viewer an idea of the atmosphere of this rather small Caribbean island fishing town. The main road offers tourists a limited number of shops, restaurants and excursion sale agents. On the beach road there are a few more restaurants and bars and also a very "limited" local shopping center. As tourists who enjoy visiting local towns in the destinations we visit we where rather disappointed with the Town of Las Terranas. Our opinion (just our opinion) was that the town lacked the local (Dominican) business and culinary experiences that you for example meet in Asia. Street kitchens etc. although local art was very abundant!! The Les Terranas area is full of hotels catering to all needs. Many of the hotels are big all inclusive resorts which are very popular with Canadian and American tourists, also the European charter tourists who typically seem to stay at these resorts for 14 days (just as we ourselves did). Wiki writes about Las Terrenas, "It is internationally known for its high rate of tourism and its white sand beaches and clear waters. Among the most frequented places visitors are mostly European nationality Spanish, Italian, French and German. One of the best known people or community in the town, is the village of fishermen. Its name comes from the town was formerly mainly inhabited by fishermen. Among the best known beaches are beach poppy tip and whales. The attractions of this region is constantly growing due to investment in tourist buildings like hotels, clubs, restaurants and shopping such places as Port Plaza las Terrenas, with a similar architecture of a boat. In the evenings entertainment centers are crowded by hundreds of tourists and like their restaurants with a wonderful view of the beach..." Wiki writes about Samana, "Samaná (Spanish pronunciation: [samaˈna]) is a province of the Dominican Republic. Its capital is Santa Bárbara de Samaná, usually known as Samaná. Samaná is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the northeastern part of the Dominican Republic. It is known for its mountains of which it is almost entirely formed. Samaná has numerous beaches, and with the 6 November 2006 opening of the new Samaná El Catey International Airport, it is bound to become one of major tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic..." Wiki writes about The Dominican Republic, The Dominican Republic (Listeni/dəˌmɪnɨkən rɨˈpʌblɪk/; Spanish: República Dominicana [reˈpuβlika ðominiˈkana]) is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western three-eighths of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands, along with Saint Martin, that are shared by two countries. Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second-largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba), with 48,445 square kilometres (18,705 sq mi) and nearly 10 million people, one million of which live in the capital city, Santo Domingo.." This footage was filmed in Las Terrenas a small town located in the Samaná province on the island of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. Santo Domingo the capital of the Dominican Republic pleasantly surprised us http://travelwith2ofus.com/utterly-amazed-by-los-tres-ojos-thrilled-by-santo-domingo.php. It's beautiful colonial architecture mixed with the modern structures added to the quaintness of the place. We were thrilled by the Three Eyes National Park or as it is locally known Los Tres Ojos. The Dominican Republic was our first stop on this cruise and we awoke already docked in the capital city of Santo Domingo. The first look we got of the city was amazing because the sun was now rising and its golden rays kissed the city and presented it majestically. http://travelwith2ofus.com/utterly-amazed-by-los-tres-ojos-thrilled-by-santo-domingo.php

Take a tour of City of Puerto Plata in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic - part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Puerto Plata, capital of the province by the same name, is one of the Dominican Republic's greatest cities. It is a beautiful coastal locale, with many sights that draw visitors from all over the world. The city's mountain, Pico Isabel de Torres, has a replica of the Christ the Redeemer statue and a large garden at its peak. Rather than climb the 2,600 feet to the mountaintop, visitors can take Puerto Plata's aerial tram car. This area was one of the first settlements to be founded after the Americas were discovered by European explorers. Getting out from the city, there are the beautiful Caribbean beaches to visit for swimming, surfing, or sunning.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. The Dominican Republic is the oldest country of the Americas, the first place reached by Christopher Columbus in 1492. The Hispaniola is the island where the Dominican Republic is located, along with Haiti. It was the first place reached by Christopher Columbus, who originally named it La Española. Santo Domingo is the first capital city of North and South America and houses the first cathedral the first university and the first hospital! 2. Nestled between the rolling hills of the Northern Corridor mountain range, the 27 Waterfalls of Rio Damajagua are known as one of the best eco-adventure sites in the DR. Visitors can jump, slide and swim through Mother Nature’s water park. 3. Altos de Chavon is the recreation of a medieval European town, complete with an open-air amphitheater, cobble-stone roads and a charming church. 4. Spain ceded the colony to France in 1795, and Haitian blacks under Toussaint L'Ouverture conquered it in 1801. In 1808, the people revolted and captured Santo Domingo the next year, setting up the first republic. Spain regained title to the colony in 1814. In 1821 Spanish rule was overthrown, but in 1822 the colony was reconquered by the Haitians. In 1844 they were again thrown out, and from 1861 to 1865 it became a province of Spain. President Buenaventura Báez, faced with an economy in shambles, attempted to have the country annexed to the U.S. in 1870, but the U.S. refused. 5. The Dominican Republic has both highest point (Pico Duarte at 3098 m) and the lowest point (Lago Enriguillo at 34 m) in the Caribbean, the last also being the largest lake in the region. 6. Merengue is a type of music and dance originating in the Dominican Republic which has become a very popular genre throughout Latin America and in the United States who hold Hispanic communities. Merengue was first mentioned in the mid 19th century with the earliest documented evidence being newspaper articles. Nowadays it is THE music that comes to mind when thinking of Latin America. 7. Santo Domingo is North and South America's first capital city, the site of the first catholic cathedral, first university and hospital. Some of the original buildings have been restored and can be visited in Santo Domingo's Colonial City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
